Jim Hummel co anchors News15 at 5, 6, 10. During his 15-year tenure as an anchor/reporter in Lafayette, Hummel has covered nearly every major news story in Acadiana. His investigative work has won two Suncoast Regional Emmy Awards, and three regional Edward R. Murrow Awards. He’s also been named Louisiana’s Reporter of the Year four times by the Associated Press Broadcaster’s Association.
Hummel is often tapped to moderate gubernatorial, congressional, and mayoral forums and debates. He’s reported live on CNN and CNN Headline news, and his 2018 report on a Vermilion parish teacher’s arrest at a school board meeting was featured on TV stations across the country.
One of his most memorable assignments was a 2018 trip to Washington D.C. with a group of World War II veterans. During this Heroes Flight, Hummel forged friendships with some of the veterans, which he will never forget.
Hummel began his career in Boston, where he worked as an assignment editor at NECN and as a news writer for WCVB-TV.
A graduate of Stonehill College in Easton, Massachusetts, Hummel earned his Bachelor of Science degree in biochemistry. In fact he published a thesis: The Synthesis of Vinyl and Polyhydroxylated Pyrrolidines and Purification Attempts Using High Performance Liquid Chromatography.
Hummel also studied at the University of Westminster in London. There, he took courses in language, theater, art, and history. It’s this diverse educational experience that Hummel credits for sparking his interest in journalism.
A native of Buffalo, NY, Hummel is happy to now call Louisiana home. In his spare time, he enjoys running, cooking, and experiencing all the joie de vivre Acadiana has to offer.
