LAFAYETTE, La. (NEWS 15) — A massive house fire in Lafayette sent smoke billowing and flames shooting into the night sky above the Hub City.
Firefighters responded in force to battle the inferno and try to keep it from spreading in the neighborhood.
The house fire broke out in the 300 block of Jeanette Street. The residential neighborhood is located just off Eraste Landry Road and Bertrand Drive. The only thing cutting through the thick smoke was the flashing lights of dozens of police and fire vehicles at the scene.
The fire ignited around 7:15 p.m., producing intense smoke, flames, and heat. Since then, firefighters were able to get the blaze under control and put it out.
Officials with the Lafayette Fire Department said a mother and her adult daughter were inside when they heard a popping sound.
They added the mother looked outside to investigate the sound and she noticed the carport on fire.
Both were able to get out of the home through a back door and a neighbor helped them cross the backyard fence.
Fortunately, there were no injuries. Acadian Ambulance paramedics were at the fire location ready if needed to tend to any victims.
The charred remains of the home are all that's left. It’s not yet known what may have sparked the house fire.
