NEW IBERIA, La. — Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop I responded to a deadly crash involving a bicyclist on LA 88 (Coteau Road) near its intersection with LA 89 in Iberia Parish on Saturday, January 11, shortly before 8 p.m.
The crash claimed the life of Timothy Maturin Jr., 31, of New Iberia.
The preliminary investigation revealed Maturin was traveling west on LA 88 while riding a bicycle.
At the same time, a 2019 Ford F-150 was also traveling west on LA 88. For reasons still under investigation, the Ford struck the rear of the bicycle in the westbound lane.
Maturin, who was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene. The driver of the Ford was properly restrained and not injured.
Troopers determined that the bicycle was not equipped with rear lights or reflectors.
The driver of the Ford was not suspected of being impaired and voluntarily provided a breath sample, which showed no alcohol detected.
A standard toxicology sample was collected from Maturin and submitted for analysis.
The crash remains under investigation.
